Patriots give Gostowski extension

The New England Patriots have rewarded kicker Stephen Gostkowski with a four-year contract extension worth $14 million.

That’s a really nice chump of change for a guy who just has to run out on the field and kick the ball a few times per game.

Gostkowski took over as kicker for veteran star Adam Vinatieri, who left to sign a big contract with the Colts a few years ago.

There was concern that Gostkowski couldn’t possibly match Vinatieri in kicking ability and making clutch field goals. ( Read More…)

Owens wants to play for Patriots

Free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens said he would love to play for the New England Patriots.

Owens thinks he would fit in well with the offense, benefitting from quarterback Tom Brady and all the other weapons.

The only problem is that the Patriots seem to have absolutely no interest in the troubled veteran. ( Read More…)

Welker participates in OTA’s

New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker was on the field for the team’s OTA’s.

Welker was seen sporting a knee brace as he recovers from an ACL tear at the end of last season.

He was seen participating in drills and running routes at about 75 percent at points in practice.

The wideout certainly wasn’t cutting with the same sharpness that he was just a year ago, which is hardly unexpected.

The team still has not given a timetable on when Welker may return to game action, but he looks to be ahead of schedule.

New England Patriots schedule released

The New England Patriots 2010 schedule has been released, and it looks like they could cruise through the first part of the year.

In what is a very balanced schedule that generall starts easy, had a difficult middle part and then ends nicely, the Patriots are set up well to win the division yet again.

The season begins with difficult games against the Bengals and Jets, but the Bills and Dolphins follow before their bye week.

This is where the schedule gets hard, as five of their next six games are against Baltimore, San Diego, Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. Ouch. A 3-3 mark over those six games wouldn’t be bad at all.

The schedule slate gets much easier toward the end, with games against Chicago, Miami, Buffalo and Detroit to pad their record.

Tough home schedule marks Patriots’ 2010 slate

By Bud L. Ellis

The New England Patriots will be put to the test by their home schedule in 2010.

The National Football League has released its schedule of home games and road games for the upcoming season. Dates and times have not been finalized, although the Patriots may be traveling to Detroit for a Thanksgiving Day matchup with the Lions.

The real story is New England’s home schedule, in which six of the eight games come against playoff qualifiers from last season. It’s a very daunting slate that includes matchups with AFC champion Indianapolis, NFC runner-up Minnesota, AFC wild-card qualifiers Baltimore and the New York Jets, AFC North champion Cincinnati and NFC wild-card team Green Bay.

The other two home games are against AFC East division rivals Buffalo and Miami.

The road schedule doesn’t appear anywhere as tough as the home portion. Games at the Jets and at AFC West champion San Diego are the only road contests against playoff teams. The rest of the schedule away from home includes visits to Buffalo, Miami, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Chicago.

According to opponents’ win percentage from last season, the Patriots’ schedule is sixth-toughest in the NFL.
