Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to a 38-24 win over the Miami Dolphins last night, breaking records along the way.
Brady’s 517 total passing yards broke the record for the most in a single game. Among the yards passed was the shorty he threw to Wes Welker, who sprinted 99 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, a play that tied the record for the longest scoring pass in league history. You could practically hear the former Dolphin laughing all the way to the endzone.
Despite the team’s brilliant display, Brady was very low key about their stunning performance, remarking more about the weather than the win, ““It was hot. It’s still hot. But we tried to play at a fast tempo and take advantage of some of the opportunities we got when they weren’t ready to go. I thought we did a decent job.”
Miami quarterback Chad Henne did do a more than decent job, putting up his own 416-yard effort, but there were too many forces against him besides the muggy temps. The Dolphins lost two of their starting cornerbacks, Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, thanks to the heat in the second half, leaving the second string struggling. Their running game was nonexistent without a decent fullback.
Any buzz about Tom Brady getting old may have been temporarily silenced after last night, but the season is just getting started. However, if the Pats keep putting up these kinds of stats, woe unto their foes.
